What is MELUG Mid-Coast?

MELUG Mid-Coast is a subdivision of the MainE Linux User Group. It's a group of Linux hobbyists and enthusiasts in the vicinity of the Mid-Coast Maine area. Our members share interests in Linux and free or low-cost implementations of open source and free software.

MELUG Mid-Coast meetings are now combined with MELUG-Central. See the MELUG-Central site for the meeting schedule. Meetings are either technical presentations, product demonstrations, or general question and answer sessions. All meetings are free and open to the public. Come Join Us!

We are able to get meeting space at the Belfast Free Library upon request. Members may arrange to meet in Belfast, if desired. To request a meeting in Belfast use the Mid-Coast Google Group.

We had an open discussion session. There were several demos of new distros and projects that we were all working on at the moment. One quick demo was the installation of one of the images from Turnkey Linux , a virtual appliance library. The library is a collection of over 45 ready images that make setting up a Linux appliance as easy as downloading an iso or a prebuilt virtual machine.The images are built on Ubuntu Lucid, the latest Long Term Support Ubuntu release.

For demonstration purposes the File Server Appliance ISO image was downloaded and installed in a VirtualBox virtual machine.

We discussed a now popular alternative to Live CDs, namely USB Flash Drives. USB Flash Drives first became popular as a replacement for a Linux CD when 1GB drives beame affordable. Now that 4GB drives are readily available for the same price, what is really needed is a way to combine several CDs onto one USB drive.
