There was a demonstration of a Linux install using the Ubuntu Alternate Install CD. The alternate CD (text-based) is useful in instances where the hardware does not meet the minimum for installation using the Live CD such as an older system with low memory.

We discussed some of the various ways that a hard drive could be formatted for the installation of a desktop system. It was shown how using a separate home partition for user data could make it easier to preserve data when doing future upgrades or installations.

Some of the additional features of the text based install CD were covered such as the recovery console and the OEM install.

Questions: How can I easily find out information about the hardware in my computer while running Linux?

Use the Hardware Lister. (install lshw and optionally, lshw-gtk)

How can I install the Chromium web browser in Ubuntu?

Look for the latest Chromium in the repositories of newer Ubuntu releases

How can I install the Chrome web browser without using Ubuntu PPA?

Look here for a way to install Chrome on various Linux distributions.

I don't like the movie player that comes with Ubuntu. Can I install another movie player?

There are several movie player apps available including cross platform players such as VLC.
